My wife and I are Pastors. But before we started pastoring as the man, we were the gopher, boss about, peon, bus driving and janitorial support person for our Youth group. Part of our duties was being the leaders for the song service in youth church. Well I was the leader, my wife opting to let one young lady play the piano, a couple of singers, bass player, drummer and a wanna be lead guitarist with a very nice stratocaster. He also had this huge amplifier that he insisted playing through on the stage pointing at the audience, cranked all the way up. Amp =200W, total sound system 200W so Amp cranked won out every time.
So our Youth Pastor quits and it comes down to my wife and I as we fill in. We decided that maybe we would become the paid youth Pastor and serve on the church under the new Senior Pastor. So we do the interview, the meetings and all that and they decided to send the Pastor's wife over to check out the youth service one night. Well we practiced till we had the music good as the Pastor's wife was an accomplished pianist and we wanted to show we knew what we were doing. So everything is ready, sermon prepared, music studied and ready for the service. She comes in (granted they are a little reserved) and sits in the back. We greet everyone and start to play.
Everything is going splendidly until the third song which had a pretty good beat and was a little edgier than the other when I see my wife make this face of disbelief and horror. I, being the professional that I am keep playing and singing as I am trying to find out what is happening behind me. She finally closes her eyes, drops her head in her hands and refuses to look up. At that moment as we entered the bridge, there was a moment where the voices dropped out I was able to take a peak to see what was going on, only to see my guitarist with his guitar behind his head preparing to wail away on a spur of the moment solo. Apparently he tried to do a swing with the guitar and it came to rest behind his head so he carried on finishing the chorus behind his head and going into the solo at the bridge. His solo was none too good and we hurried into the chorus again as I was watching the back of the Pastor's wife slowly make her way out the back door. Needless to say, I was not hired.... can I say it was because of the guitarist? No, but I am sure it did not help.
