I've heard players say they went to locking tuners to keep their Strats in tune with the tremelo.

But I think the problem was never the tuners, since we do string bends all the time on hardtails without seeing them go out of tune. And when we put on new strings, we stretch the strings by pulling up on them a few inches at the 12th fret until they stay in tune when we do that. That's a lot more tension than a trem will give.

It doesn't seem to me that the ring gear can drive the worm gear. Just the friction, not to mention the 1:15 ration makes that seem unlikely.
My experience is that tuners don't slip if you always tune up and not down.

So I think the problem must be in a tight nut or the trem balance--maybe the springs.

Well on my Strat (VG) once I put new strings on and do all the stretching, setting, tuning the I do the tremelo and start all over. Once the strings set, and to me its about a couple of days I have no problem using the tremelo, the strings stay in tune Very Happy

Grumpy - that has to be the most logical, down to earth perspective on the
matter - lets go with it! Cool
