Shucks, last night I attended a Fundraising Fair at the School I have been involved with for 21 years. I am a graying & overweight relic. All of the old teachers and staff are gone, and did not attend. Plus I don't like Rap Music either.

In the Gym, there was a Karaoke Show, and about 300 people. Man, you had to pay to go up and sing!!! Laughing

There were plenty of these Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed , and at one dull moment, a teacher, who is about the same age as one of my daughters (also a teacher)... she came to me with the microphone, and was all over me, asking me to sing.

What the heck? I told her I wasn't a singer, she said that can't be so, I look like a singer? Shocked

Shoot, did the glittering Star Sapphire in my left ear give me away? What if I was an Actor, or a Painting Artist?

Dang it, I did not go there to sing, and did not want to sing. So what if I've been singing all my life, not 37 years, all my poor life? Sad

I went there to cheer the kiddies on, and was acting as cheerleader, and laying down the groove, slapping my knees & clapping my hands. Really, I wanted to encourage, motivate and validate the students.

Well, there were NO TAKERS. The show was dying. Totally embarassed, I went up and sang Dion and the Belmont's "Teenager In Love". The crowd which was previously muttering (I don't know what) and talking loudly, not paying any attention, bored....... fell silent. Yay! They stood up to see who or what was singing. Then they almost fell over. Just fat old me, wearing a tent for a shirt! I would have done Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) as an encore. Razz

What a hoot - the expressions were simply priceless.

After that it seemed everybody wanted to sing. Did they want to better me, or had the ice just been broken? It sure doesn't matter.

The show went into overtime by one full hour, for 3 hours in total & had to be terminated, and they reached a new record Question in cash/tickets taken.

No, I did not get a record deal. I'm practising with Strat "Angel" and Zoom G-1 at home for the upcoming Coffee House for a Church, and for Children With AIDS in Africa. I didn't know if I'd be called, and I won't call them. I'm the only 'rebel' (aka. Bob Dylan wannabe?) ever there with an electric guitar.

I guess I'll do it. One of the guitar players/singers/organizer, a nice lady who gives me hugs was in the audience last night. I think that her voice-trained 10 year-old daughter was the best singer there, doing Wind Beneath My Wings. http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/bettemidler/windbeneathmywings.html

Why is this a Gig Story From Hell? Uhhhh.... I dunno, it wasn't my venue? In front of all those (critical) kids, teeny-boppers and parents. And I had to really lean into it, or get it on, bang a gong! And it made me sweat, while it made me groove. Rolling Eyes

The word "Karaoke" makes me shudder and wonder what has become of this thing we call music...
