Hey guys!

I'm looking for advice. My 10 year-old daughter will be starting guitar lessons, and I want to get her a good guitar for starting out.

I would start her out with an electric, but I think it would be best to give her something acoustic that she could pick up and play anywhere.

I want her to learn Spanish guitar style, but I'm thinking the neck width of a classical might be a bit much for her small hands.

I'm also wanting her to learn some electric at the same time, and hse can use one of mine.

Any advice about which kind of guitar?

I just bought a Takamine Jasmine for a good friend's daughter, and I've been very impressed with it, for the money (100 bucks).

I lowered the action a little at the bridge and the nut, and it plays pretty good now. It has a relatively small nut, which can help smaller hands, and the body size in somewhere between a 3/4 size and full size.

I just tried one out today, actually!

It seemed pretty good for the money, better than the others I tried. But the action was a bit high for learning maybe.

I also tried out some small electrics, and they were okay too. I liked playing the little electric Ibanez the most.

Are you talkin' about the Jasmine? Yeah, the action on that one is a little high, but I was able to bring it down to a very nice, low level, and it plays great now. Most every guitar at this price range is gonna need some tech work to get it to work nice. Cool

I took my daughter to the big city and went to a few music stores, where we tried out lots of small instruments. I wasn't really impressed with any of them as easy players. But more disappointing was that my daughter showed no spark of interest in any of the guitars. The one stringed instrument that she showed any enthusiasm for was a 3/4 size violin that was made in Bavaria about 30 years ago and had a built in pitch pipe. Maybe that's what I should get her instead.

I'm a big fan of Taylors. I suggest the ce310. It's one of those smaller-body acoustics.

It's pretty tough to go wrong with a Taylor.

But then again, I can say the same about....Laravee, Martin, Guild, Santa Cruz and any of the higher end Alvarez's.

The start of this thread reminded me of this rather nice little article (parents need to read this):

The 310s & all of the X10 Taylors are standard size dreadnaughts, the 314 & 312 are smaller..of couse I added the p/up.
this is one of my Taylor xx10's

And this is my 314, slimmer waist & more comfortable than a dread.

Get her a little 'vintage travel acoustic'

They're real cheap and real small / lightweight, but sound brilliant. they come with a good little gig bag, and as im sure a 10 year old girl would like, they come in pink!
