Where do I get it? How do I find it? I've got a need for speed.

In particular I'm thinking about songs like Texas Flood starting at the third measure to the end of the intro. Or Red House intro, etc.

I know. . . I know. Practice. But there has to be some pointers. Sweep picking etc.

Use a metronome to practice and gradually speed it up when you can play what ever practicing cleanly. Try to fret every note perfect and clean or it will sound like mud at high speed. I usually warm up with the ol 1234 going all the way up the neck on all strings picking each note and playing the same thing only picking the first note(legato) then backwards. For sweep picking you guessed it 1234 except start on the low E string first fret then the 2 fret A string 3 fret D 4 fret G playing with only down strokes and concentrating on keeping both hands going the same speed than practice going back up starting on the first fret G second fret D 3 fret A and 4 fret E. You can move this anywhere on the neck. Hope this helps good luck.

Fast players don't really move FASTER so much as they move LESS.

Practice playing clean as fast as you can. I mean, don't practice any faster than you can be clean and crisp, well techniqued notes. Because clean play always sounds faster than sloppy play. Build up speed while playing clean, crisp notes. You will get faster in time, but don't sacrifice technique for fast. Sloppy fast sounds terrible. Disciplined practice gets results faster.

As the old adage goes: "If you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast"

Youse guys are all right on, but I really like what Matney said here. I have a friend who plays many styles great, but is also a huge fan of Brent Mason's style and that ilk. He has spent years pursuing it, and plays with a tiny thumbpick. When you watch him rip these things off though, it doesn't appear like his fingers are moving that fast. It's kinda deceptive, but the technique focuses on economy of motion to get to that level.

I shouldn't even chime in on this one, because I am far from ever being a "fast" player, but I constantly work on my technique. Cool

Play on,
Stan

At least a couple of times a week I go through a drill someone showed me way back when. Pick a scale you want to work on and with a metronome, using alternate picking, play throught the scale, front to back, with single notes. When you get back to the starting note move up a fret and run through again. Do this for up to 12 frets and back down. Next time around pick each note twice (down/up), Then three times (down/up/down, up/down/up, etc.) and finally, four times each note.

This does help a great deal in developing accuracy and speed.
