Guys,
I was wondering how many of you read musical notation to play guitar during your normal day-to-day studies or do you mostly use TAB or some other technique instead...or a combination of all of those perhaps?
Regards

I read tab mainly because it's so easy to get online. I'll look at sheet music from time to time though. I think tab is a little easier for me if I already know what the song sounds like. _________________ Peace Out, Bra !....

I can read music, but I'm pretty rusty so I don't do it much. I look up tabs mainly to get the keys and chord structure, but most of the time I just play and learn by ear. _________________ "But I don't want to go among mad people" Alice remarked.

I only wish I could read sheet music. I could when I was a kid, playing sax in the school band. But that was forth grade. Not it is just dots and staffs.
So it is TAB for me.
Can someone explain how to read sheet music? |

I don't mean to over simplify... but you determine the tempo of the song... you determine what note is on the staff... you determine the duration of the note on the staff... and you play that note for that long on the guitar. TAB falls short on the whole "duration" thing... that's why they include standard notation with most TAB. Both fall short on guitar fingering information. _________________

I can read sheet music, but I'm slow at it. So far, I've just refused to even look at tablature. _________________ ...all the gray areas are becoming black holes... |

I haven't read music since I got my music degree. And that was a long time ago!!! Picking songs up by ear was always natural, easy, and fast for me. I guess I was blessed with a good ear. I don't read tab, either. _________________ Yer guitar pickin' friend,

I wasn't blessed with a good ear, so I had to learn to read it, at least somewhat, and I have studied music theory so I could understand what's goin' on. _________________ ...all the gray areas are becoming black holes... |

I don't read either one really, but I will occasionally look up some tab if I'm looking for some specific fingering that's eluding me. Those Guitar World magazine features are good for that.
Put sheet music in front of me and you can watch my eyes glaze over in record time. It must have made sense to me at some point in my life, 'cause I did take lessons as a kid (on accordion ) and about 20 years ago on flute. _________________

I use tabs to point me in the right direction. I get the feel for the song, strum pattern, and timing by listening. I wish I could read sheet music. I know the notes and stuff but, just never got into it. _________________ Whether you think you can...or you can't...you're right!

Q: Do you know how to get a guitar player to turn down?

| I just started to learn to read music when I took pedal steel lessons about a year ago, as the pedal steel is a more complex instrument. I can't see myself using it for guitar, though. I use my ears most of the time or I'll use tab to learn something really difficult. |

Hey I am a bit late into this game, but...
I use standard notation, tab and my ears. Trying to reduce the amount of tab, and increase using my ears. The standard notation is a necessary evil, that I will resort to sometimes, like yesterday when I was lazy and tired and picked a meldoy to a tune from dixieland fake book instead of doing it by ear. _________________ Ronnie Earl: 'Music is not a sport, there's no competition'
